One of our missions at Centre Syracuse is to make treatment affordable without compromising quality of care. We believe that those seeking care for an eating disorder as well as insurance companies providing reimbursement have become increasingly conscious of costs as well as quality of healthcare services. Although most insurance companies will reimburse treatment costs at Centre Syracuse if you have the appropriate type of coverage, the unfortunate reality for many Americans is that they do not have adequate insurance coverage and must assume some, or all, of the financial burden of treatment.

After comparing costs of treatment at other specialized treatment facilities, people often asked how we can provide such economical treatment while maintaining high standards of care delivered by highly qualified staff. The cost of 10 weeks of treatment in the Partial Hospital Program is about the same as the cost of 10-14 days of typical inpatient hospitalization. We are proud of the innovations that have allowed us to achieve our cost-effectiveness mission.
Here are a few of them:
1) Our partial hospital program (PHP) provides specialized eating disorder treatment services similar to inpatient programs; however, since we are not a hospital, we are able to avoid the high overhead inherent to inpatient programs.
2) Treatment in the PHP program is 5 days a week rather than 7 days a week as is customary in hospital settings. As indicated in the figures below, there are obvious cost-savings associated with the 20-day month of PHP (no weekends) compared to a 30-day month for inpatient hospitalization.
3) The CS facility has been designed under the premise that expensive overnight hospital stays are unnecessary for most eating disorder patients when treatment is delivered by a highly experienced treatment team. We have eliminated costly overnight stays by providing the option of living in or near to the main facility in safe and comfortable independent living quarters for PHP program participants .
4) You have probably already guessed that Syracuse is not a suburb of Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles or New York City. Centre Syracuse is located in beautiful Upstate New York with a modest cost of living and a high level of safety.

5) Finally, we do not offer “spa” amenities such as massages, horseback riding, rock climbing, swimming pools or breath-taking vista views of the ocean. It is our opinion that these are ancillary aspects of treatment that increase treatment costs and have not been shown to enhance treatment effectiveness. Nevertheless, as is evident in the photo tour, Centre Syracuse is a spacious, comfortable, and modern treatment facility located in the safe Eastwood section of the City of Syracuse, New York.

Figure 1 provides a cost comparison between one month of the CS PHP (Partial Hospitilization Program) versus inpatient hospitalization at the typical rates of $1,000, $1,500 and $2,000 per day.

Figure 2
Figure 2 provides the same cost comparison for 10 weeks of treatment.
The forgoing discussion is not meant to imply that hospitalization is not necessary for a small subgroup of those suffering from serious eating disorders. However, as we have shown over the past 10 years, in most cases, effective treatment does not require very costly and highly restrictive inpatient treatment.
